CH3SNAS: 1.04RC5 firmware
July 23, 2008
After getting good feedback from various users and testing myself as well I was really unhappy with the way the UPnP server was integrated and causing issues with updates. And not to forget having issues with Playstation 3 and suddenly missing SRT support again (neat feature which is not available within many UPnP servers, so I could get some fame… (I already have cause we do have Kernel NFS ;-) ).
Today a new release for beta testers .. 1.04RC5.
What is extremely important is that after firmware upgrade you NEED to reset the CH3SNAS to factory defaults. If you do not do this than certain scripts will not be updated from firmware into flash.
- Fixed: users should be able to play 8GB MOVIE files through the UPnP AV server (Especially PlayStation 3 users)
- Fixed SRT support: When a DMA is actively requesting for the SRT file the UPnP server gave it and the subtitles were displayed correctly during playback.
- Fixed & Updated: some users reported that updating the UPnP AV server was not possible, no new files were entered into the database. We have verified the working and we have re-introduced the ‘RESCAN’ button to give users the ability to force a database rescan.
Please be notified that if you modify the SHARE PATH (by default folder ROOT) into a folder which contains a white space the auto-update feature will NOT work
So do not use: ‘Media Video’ but use ‘Media-Video’ or ‘Media_Video’ otherwise the inotify tool will not start. It does not matter if the main shard folder is containing folders with white spaces in its name. Just do not start with it.
Note: messages recieved upon the ‘kernel’ messages seen is under debugging/investigation. If someone has an easy ‘how-to reproduce’ it could be useful

The tools/time page, doesn’t work correctly. The time is always incorrect. Only the “from my computer” setting does it right. But after a couple hours it’s incorrect again.
The time zone option is incorrect too.

I just streamed a 9GB .vob file to my PS3 and it played start to finish. Great job guys!
Bas is right. Something goes wrong with the time settings. I can set the time using a NTP server or from my computer. But after a restart it is set back one hour.
My settings are:
NTP Server: nl.pool.ntp.org
Time Zone: GMT +01:00
Daylight Saving Time: EU
Thanks for the great UPnP update.

Question, totally of topic concerning the new rc, but maybe it is still somebody can answer it?
Is there somewhere a log where you can view activities? For example I see a lot of harddisk and network activity, but have no clue what is happening. I presume somebody is using the FTP, but I don’t know where to check this.
If this is not a feature yet, is it possible to have it on some sort of wishlist?
Thanks!

if i reset my factory settings, will it affect my funplug installation?
July 24th, 2008 at 1:55 pm
@harry:
No, it will only reset the parameters that you you can access through the web interface. Funplug remains untouched.

I still have Spindown issues with my Raid1/JBOD combination currently on 1.03 finall.
I have 2 Samsung Spinpoint F1 1TB disks
Does it make sense to go to 1.04RC5 for this issue?
Thanks!
July 24th, 2008 at 11:13 pm
@GertJan
In case it is relevant: I am (now still) running 1.03. With Raid1 (750 MB)/JBOD (500 MB) and two Samsung Spinpoint F1 1 TB disks. So same configuration as yours.
I am not aware of Spindown issues, but I haven’t searched to find what the symptoms are. So if you tell me how to test, I can tell you if I have the same issue.

Hello,
Ftp server: (FTP ACCESS LIST) to a same one user it is not possible to allow to acces two folders (one in read only and other in read/write). It would have to be normal to allow this, is an error?
July 25th, 2008 at 1:28 pm
it’s not supported, see previous release notes
July 25th, 2008 at 6:51 pm
I still have the 94 procent issue ! Tried all firmwares from 1.02 to 1.04 and nothing helps. Even upped the timeout to 99 min. and still nothing. I have two samsung F1 TB disks and want to use them in raid 1. After formatting 1 by 1 I now see volume 1 and 2 but when i try to reformat them to raid 1 I’m always stuck on 94 procent. Please help…
July 25th, 2008 at 10:15 pm
There still seems to be an issue with special characters in file or folder names.
For example a folder named:
Monty Python’s Flying Circus
is not accessible on the PS3 (protocol error 2114).
Removing the ‘ “solves” the problem.
July 25th, 2008 at 10:37 pm
Where do I have to look in the dmesg result to see if the disk are spin down according to debian?
I can’t find anything there wat looks the same…
July 25th, 2008 at 11:20 pm
Tom, I also had the 94 procent issue, when I switched from laptop to configure the box, the problem was gone. Maybe a combination of the NIC that is directly connected. Try a different PC for configuring..
Ok here my serious issues with this RC5 version. I’m running 2x Seagate 7200.9 250GB’s and when I boot up the NAS the leds keep flashing and the drives are not recognised. When I return to the 1.03 all is ok again. Drives are seen and can be formatted normally. I also tried after the successful format to upgrade then, but the same issue. Drive leds keep flashing and drives are not recognised… I’m back to 1.03m that is running fine again…
July 26th, 2008 at 11:12 am
@ AXE:
you\’re my hero !! It works ! Configured it over the wireless with my laptop and it works like a sharm…
Could you explain why, would be nice to know.
What funplug would you advice me to use, I\’m mainly gonna use the nas to stream music from itunes to a squeezebox and want to remotely acces photo\’s stored on the nas. Thx for the input…
July 26th, 2008 at 11:36 am
Ok, nice that it worked Tom. I really can’t tell you any more info, I have the box for 2 days now, so I’m also checking all the options out..
I also resolved my issue with the Seagate HD’s. The 1.04 firmware was not the issue, since also suddenly the 1.03 gave the same error. The problem is that with these drive(s) loaded the configuration gets lost after a shutdown of the NAS and restart. Then the drives are flashing and the only way to access them again is to go back to the factory defaults. After a shutdown and restart the drama starts over again… I just tested with an old Maxtor 80GB and it works like a charm… Conclusion, avoid the Seagate ST3250824AS (7200.9) models at all cost, these are not compatible…

Hallo Dennis,

There’s something not working with non english characters. I tested this release to see if my problem with big files was solved and found it was apparently not. A 8,4GB 1920×1080 MPEG-2 .vob file, was reported 80 MB in the PS3, and only played for 1 min and 31 seconds. The file was called “El barbero diabólico de la calle Fleet”. I renamed it to “El barbero diabolico de la calle Fleet” (replaced ‘ó’ with ‘o’) and now the PS3 sees all the 8,4 GB from the first bit to the last. It’s a bit nasty to rename the files, but at least now I can play them all from start to end. I may be wrong, but I think this did not happen before I updated from 1.03 to 1.04RC4 (and later 1.04RC5). In 1.03 I couldn’t play beyond 2 GB, but files smaller than that played flawlessly. Now files even smaller than 2 GB fail if they have non english characters.
Thanks for the support.
Regards,
doragasu.

Hallo,

July 29th, 2008 at 5:24 am
Hello Dennis,
i wont to copy 192 GB and the System say´s 4 Houres.
i com this morning in the Computer Room and the Fan run in High Speed and the copy are down after 32 GB.
Yesterday stand the Nas for 4 Times. i must reset it over the Power Kabel.

@Dennis-v:
I configured the ftp server to use port 2500 (don’t ask me why) and I configured my router to route all internet traffic on port 2500 to port 2500 on the nas.
From a remote location I manage to logon but when I try to list a directory, the connection times out (see Dennis-v’s ftp log above).
When my ftp client (Filezilla) switches to passive mode, it gives the following message: “Server sent passive reply with unroutable address. Using server address instead”. Then it tries to do a ‘ls’ on the local address of the ftp server (192.168.1.105), which of course doesn’t work and times out.
Dennis-v says that everything works ok when he uses the standard port 21.
Are there any network guru’s here who can help us with this problem?
July 30th, 2008 at 10:55 am
Thanks for the english Version, i didn’t understand a word ;)
Afaik, every passive FTP-Transfer needs a lot more ports (normally a complete range) that needs to be routed through the router.
@dennis: I have now on 1.03 the same Kernel-Problem with “temperature g 0″ as in 1.04RC1-4. I’ve installed a fun_plug an a usb-stick. Today after a reboot the fancontrol wasn’t working and i saw the following:
root@ULINAS:~# temperature g 0Temperature type : Centigrade
: get temperature = 0
The “fanspeed w 4000″ then also doesn’t work.
dmesg keeps repeating the following:
TWSI: mvTwsiStartBitSet ERROR - Start Clear bit TimeOut .TWSI: mvTwsiStopBitSet ERROR - Stop bit TimeOut .
Perhaps your Kernel-developer can have a look at http://forum.dsmg600.info/p9779-2008-01-24-22%3A19%3A40.html#p9779 (The kernel patches), perhaps he/she will see a difference.

Hai PeterS,
Hai PeterS, I am on holiday but there is a server at home and i use the remote desktop op mine laptop so i can chance my router. I have chanced the router to 21. This works and afterwards everything on another poort (for exampele 2500 ) and in my router i chance 21 to 2500 in my router. This give the result that the CH3SNAS accept this but I but cannot see the folders. I dont think that the trouble is in my router. I have also linksys (Link NSLU2) and I cannot change the port on this device. It doesn’t mather what port it would be as long as it is no port which I use.

Dennis…V

1.04RC5
created new user
* tried to change password –> popup
* popup does not contain the username for the user (i typed it in myself)
* press save -> takes ages and times out
time issue
* i have set time from system clock and at first save it popped +1 hour (timezone +1 amsterdam)
* second try to sync with sytem clock stayed
* Have not tested sync of system clock furthermore (uptime 10 minutes since shrinkwrap has been opened ;-))
July 31st, 2008 at 7:32 pm
I can confirm the change user password issue.
July 31st, 2008 at 9:46 pm
I can confirm the time issue, after some time it has reset again to +1 hour
August 1st, 2008 at 8:51 am
It would make my life much more easier, that when you submit an issue/bug that you exactly described how it can be reproduced
the username / password issue is an Mozilla Firefox issue, cause MSIE is working fine..
So therefor: yes I can reproduce it now, and as work around you can use MSIE till this time
Time issue I still cannot reproduce, my devices are ok

Een testje:
Timezone staat op +1
Daylight saving time op EU

August 3rd, 2008 at 10:20 am
in een NAS raymond??
August 3rd, 2008 at 11:13 am
..
August 3rd, 2008 at 11:20 am
August 3rd, 2008 at 5:03 pm
I think I found a bug that has haunted me for a long time. I’ve often had problems with the NAS crashing when the UPnP server was on. To see what was causing this, I’ve basically been moving my complete media collection piece by piece to see where it locked up.
It turns out it’s a file called:
01 - Burial - [untitled].mp3
With this file in the media folder, the NAS locks up completely when refreshing the database.
I renamed it to:
01 - Burial - untitled.mp3
This caused the refresh database process to lock up, but the other NAS functions still worked.
August 3rd, 2008 at 5:16 pm
Ok, forget what I posted, I have removed the file, but now the NAS still locks up.
It just takes 15 minutes to do so….arg!
August 4th, 2008 at 8:25 am
And I found another problem with special characters. When trying to browse to this folder through FTP, I get the following error:
550 Can’t change directory to /Volume_1/Media/Music/Röyksopp: No such file or directory
August 4th, 2008 at 9:13 am
Mr. Pjanssen: how to reproduce? I have no issue accessing folders like: tiësto etc..
August 4th, 2008 at 10:05 am
Hmm that is odd. Perhaps it is not due to the special character then.
I can’t say much more than that I get that error when I try to access that specific folder through http://FTP. It works without any problems through Mac OSX and the PS3.
I’m using FireFTP (firefox plugin) by the way.

Hi Dennis,
I upgraded 3 days ago to RC5 , but the problem with “fanspeed” and “temperature” ist still present. I did a factory reset after upgrading and reloaded my settings from the saved file.
Here is the link to the original Problem
http://www.aroundmyroom.com/2008/07/04/ch3snas-firmware-104rc4/#comment-33934
Is this known at your side ? With FW newer than RC5 it was reproducible and confirmed by Uli and some other guys !
Anyone elso who has this problem ?
August 21st, 2008 at 9:28 am
I am too having problems with special characters. I tried to copy a file that contained an ë (Italië) and it would not let me.
August 21st, 2008 at 10:52 pm
Hi,
the problem
“TWSI: mvTwsiStartBitSet ERROR - Start Clear bit TimeOut”
exits also when having only the original fancontrol running, NOT setting fanspeed with “fanspeed w NEWVAL”.
I tested it with having a logging shellscript running, that gets only current “fanspeed g” and “temperature g 0″ and writes the result to a logfile every 2 minutes. After approx. 3 days the TWSI error appears as shown above (in linked thread).
Does it come from only executing “fanspeed” or “temperature” or what is the reason ?
September 1st, 2008 at 1:39 pm
is a format of my HDDs required/needed after this update ?
September 2nd, 2008 at 10:10 pm
Hey,
I’m new to the CH3SNAS, i updated the firmware to 1.04RC5 firmware RC5.
I’m using a Gb switch, i have activated the option “jumbo frames” but since then i cannot acces the web interface anymore. Telnet doesn’t not work.
I switched the CH3NAS to a 100Mb ports but i still cannot access the configuration panel.
How can i reset it ?
Any help would be very very appreciated.

October 18th, 2008 at 11:37 am
October 19th, 2008 at 11:55 am
October 19th, 2008 at 12:05 pm
