Landisk firmware upgrade

New firmware upgrade: NAS-BASIC47-B4

New beta firmware released by RDC. I’ve uploaded it into my landisk section. There are no release notes but you can use your LANDISK with VISTA now. One issue remains: passwords on folders do not work when trying to access through Vista

Release notes for the 47-B4

  • Big Memory not return (dlink switch loopback)
  • Office 2007 access stoage (excel, powerpoint etc.) garbage temp files will be saved
  • scandisk web page auto refresh (probably not implemented in my html stuff)
  • Show mac address in status screen

    Dear sir:

Thank you and danke for releasing this landisk firmware! You have saved me a great deal of aggravation.

I have a NAS device that is not branded with any name, but a circuit board on the inside says HOTWAY. This device worked fine under windows XP, but when I upgraded to vista, it stopped working. I found a blog that said this was because some implementations of SAMBA do not handle fast queries correctly–but no solution!

And then through google I found your post on whirlpool.net.au linking to your firmware. I tried using your web-kernel to upgrade my nas device, and not only did it install, but it fixed the SAMBA problem. (You might want to add the keyword hotway when announcing your updates.)

Thank you again for solving the problem!

I just upgraded my device to the latest firmware, 4.7, but used the loader i already had in my device, which is loader 7. I found it along with firmware 4.6 at a company called LAN Pleiades. The firmware works fine but the solution to my problem is yet to come.
Although the NAS support drive power down after some minutes of inactivity, the drive I am using does not seem to power back on again. If the power down option is set to 5 minutes, then after 5 minutes of inactivity, the drive inside the NAS Case will stop spinning. But later, if I try to access a file I get an error message. The web interface will work, but I won’t get any information about SMB folders and FTP accounts as this information are stored on the drive itself.
After rebooting the NAS everything is back to normal. At the moment I have turned of the power down option, but I have been facing this problem since I upgraded from firmware 3.8 – loader 5 and when I reinstalled the old firmware the problem remained.
No firmware up to now seems to solve this issue. I am using a Maxtor Ultra-ATA 133 250GB drive. Any suggestions would be appriciated.

  3. Maxtor is known for it’s excessive use of Power ..
if your device has power adapter with not much Amps.. and the capacitor inside regulating the power is not ie. 1000uF than you can have issues that the device cannot activate the HDD for spinning anymore after a spin-down

only advise: do not use that function. or change powersupply/capacitor inside the PCB

  4. Daniel says:

Bardzo fajny firmware. Co prawda kieszeń działała bez problemu, ale i tak wgrałem nowy. Czy w przyszłości będzie możliwość aby w SAMBA dać prawa tylko do odczytu?

  5. od1sea says:

I have a Maxtor Ultra-Ata 133 320GB, and no issues about it, but your considerations about power supply, Dennis, is very good.

Maybe, Luminance, you must ensure that jumpers of HD are filled as master.

    Regards

I found your site using Google, thanks for posting the firmware updates. I recently purchased a generic Landisk enclosure, the manual lists an RDC site for updates with a sticker placed over that with the main RDC URL, which doesn’t have firmware downloads as far as I can tell. I found their FTP site but that requires a password.

    I have two problems:

    (1) I use Acronis True Image Home for backups but it can’t handle the 4GB file size limitation with FAT32, I understand from your notes that Landisk has somehow gotten around the 4GB limitation. Does Acronis work now? From a posting on another site it sounded like I could format the disk with NTFS on my PC and use it with Landisk, assuming I only try to access it with PCs.

    (2) I will soon be upgrading my main PC to Vista so I will likely need the new beta firmware.

My Landisk currently has “NAS-BASIC39, LOADER 067”, The menu doesn’t have any obvious way to download the loader and other firware separately, do you have the procedure posted anywhere?

    Thanks again.

  7. 1 NTFS is not supported
+4GB files is just supported as: a +4GB file is cutted binary at the 4GB limit and an index file is made, when retrieved through lan the file is copied back again. Through USB this is not supported

    2. for loader upgrade use TFTP or the simple config tool
    simple ..

  8. Ray Arts says:

Deleting a deep folderstructure is still a problem. The folders and files are not deleted from the disk.

Is this a known bug ?

  9. Ray Arts says:

I notice that copying files to the Conceptronic makes them read-only. Trying to unflag the read-only attribute on the NAS drive does not comply.

I will test somewhat more on this issus. Maybe it is the synchronisation program that I use which fails.
    I use SuperFlexible Synchroniser.

  10. alexian says:

    thank you so much
my box is finally work with vista
but web configuration page is changed :S

can you make a step by step guide to change web inside the firmware

    thank you again

  11. I think that superflexible synchroniser is not that flexible Ray
just copy files with FTP / network sharing and check if it can be deleted. If such error would occur than it would have been reported by users.

to change website html interface into the device use the /landisk folder .. should be enough information around this here at this weblog

  12. Gulli Baer says:

how to access the device shares over LAN using LINUX. i get the device only working with windows. any ideas…thx

  13. Luminance says:

I have checked my power adapter, it providew 2A at 12V. As for the capacitor inside the LAN case, the one closer to the disk’s power supply is 100μF at 16V. There are two more capacitors, but from their locations, one should be for the enclosed FAN and the other to filter parasites comming from the LAN cable.
Should i change the capacitor? I belive that 100μF should be OK. The jumper setting on the drive is set to master or the drive is not recognized.

  14. Luminance says:

OK, now I am certain. It is definitely a firmware problem or incompatibility. I replaced the capacitor responsible for disk power up with a larger one, 2.2mF, but still the drive will not power up after entering sleep mode. It has to be firmware, because after resetting the NAS from the web interface (maintenance page) everything works fine until next hdd shutdown.
I really don’t know what to do, have anyone experienced the same problem before? There is a known issue with some Seagate drives that may fail to shutdown or power up doe to incompatibilities between the LAN case firmware and the hdd’s firmware, but nothing has been heard about Maxtor.

  15. Pat says:

Thank you…..Upgraded to your firmware and all is well.
Any change of incorporating torrentFlux in a future revision?

  16. I got ballsy and attempted the upgrade using the V-Gear’s LanDisk WebConfig. Shit. I think I did something wrong. My unit is no longer recognized. Am I supposed to update using a utility? Is my unit and data gone? Any help is appreciated.

  17. chris says:

Hi Dennis, many thx for all of this.
I’m trying to mount the disc on a linksys WRT54G with openWRT.
I tried smbclient, mount.cifs, none wants to open work with the landrive.
I didn’t find any fuseftp or lufs or curlftpfs on openwrt.

    Any idea?
    thanks!

  18. Ken Fortune says:

    Hi. Dennis:
Not sure if you saw my post of the ‘html’ page (probably the wrong place to post) but I’m looking for ideas. I have a NAS with 45/69 f/w and have this issue: DIR *.* works ok, but filtered directory listing (DIR *.EXE etc) doesnt work. Anyone seen this? If this is not just my prob, any ideas how to report this bug to RDC?
    My PC: WinXP-SP2.
Anyone ever tryied to get the source code from RDC (i.e. Open source) so we can help them fix bugs / improve it? Rather unlikely but worth asking…
    Many thanks. -Ken

  19. I will check upon the DIR *.EXE if that can be found as issue yes or no.

Soucecode you do not get. You only get the DHCP.C which is a GNU/GPL licensed software. the rest is different kind of system. They do not open it .. they will not open it ..

I wonder if many updates for 2882 will come after Vista bugs have been resolved. But mainly the more the sell the better support ;-)

  20. Ken Fortune says:

Thanks for the comments. I’m not that surprised they wont release the code, lets hope they will fix issues instead. I (as a programmer for an international hw+sw company) understand the loss of interest in old hardware when new comes along. Lets hope they will fix our chief annoyances before they lose all interest! I will wait for your results with DIR… -Ken

  21. od1sea says:

    @ chris

I tried to do same as you (openwrt with RD2882 devices) and i can’t.
It seems it work with smb packages but not with cifs, and openwrt don’t have smb package.

  22. Pat says:

I am having problems with FTP access over the internet.
I upgraded to the latest b4 firmware and the FTP via internet worked for about 30mins.
2 people connected and downloaded a couple of files, then the landisk crashed!!
I had to unplug it and leave it off for about 30mins before I could gain access again,I tried accessing via SMB,FTP and HTTP.
Now I have access again and can FTP in locally,SMB stream video and the web interface is running,I still can’t get any connections from the internet.
    Any solutions to this problem?

  23. Dominik says:

    Hi,
I’ve also had trouble getting my landrive to work under Linux.
After contacting the Linux/CIFS guys, I got a workaround:
    echo “0” >/proc/fs/cifs/LinuxExtensions
makes the mount work for me under OpenSUSE 10.2 !
I the followed up why it didn’t work and we found out the following (diagnosis done by the CIFS guys):

    >strace did show something useful
    > mount(…) = -1 ENOTDIR (Not a directory)

    >and then that led me to spotting the obvious bug which is
    >on your NAS device (server). The server is returning a
    >malformed (illegal) response.

    >The Linux cifs client was getting a 22 byte response to a level 0x200
    >(FILE_UNIX_BASIC_INFO) request that is supposed to be 100 bytes.

    >There would be nothing wrong with passing a / (or \ if this were windows), but whether the path is two
    >bytes of null or / it resolves to the same thing. The server did not return an SMB error on the call,
    >it just returned the wrong size response.
    >Just a guess … the server returned a response to a different default infolevel when it encounered
    >a QPathInfo/QFileInfo level it did not understand (instead of
returning an error not supported smb error)..

Dennis, you seem to have a contact at RDC, maybe we can get a fix ?

  24. Ken Fortune says:

    Dominik:
I tried my 45/69 NAS box with Suse 10.1 and basically had no problems. I mounted it as a smbfs device, not a cifs device – see od1sea’s last comment.

    Dennis, anyone else:
Anyone else seen my DIR *.EXE problem? Under Suse Linux I don’t get this problem (using ‘ls’ at an X-Terminal prompt) – only under XP. Perhaps it’s a result of the problem Dominik reported? I don’t know what ‘QPathInfo/QFileInfo’ is but it sounds related…

  25. Dominik says:

    Ken,
SuSE 10.2 has abandoned smbfs, it isn’t maintained anymore – so the only way to go is cifs :-( OTOH it isn’t too bad to use the more modern technlogogy.

  26. I can confirm there is a *.extention ‘bug’
checked today and you cannot find something with DIR *.EXE or DIR *.DOC etc..
when you do a DIR TEST.* than it’s working and showing the content

it’s wierd .. but confirmed by me. I am now checking if we can find some solutions through the chipset agent..

  27. lelere says:

I believe that openWRT is not the best open source for the landisk. openMCT which is based on SA200 / NAS200 open firmware maybe more convenient for a NAS. Maybe someone can build a RDC2882 definition processor file for GCC.

  28. od1sea says:

I think someone has a mistake.
chipset RDC2882, at the moment only can run with rdc frimwares ( they are not GPL).

When we say about “openwrt” this mean “connect openwrt devices (routers) with landisk to share hard disk on lan”, this not mean to put openwrt on a landisk.

    @sl
i think never will see NTFS partitions on a landisk

  29. StewR says:

Dennis, I’m running version 46 and patiently waiting for 47 (final) to be issued.

In the meantime, have you any experience of the NS-347 hanging or poor clock drift?

It seems many users suffer from the clock drift problem and no amount of configuring SNTP and Time Server appears to make the Landisk periodically update the clock time from an Internet Time Server (it works OK manually if you click ‘OK’).

I wondered if you could pass these comments on to your RDC Chipset Agent?
As an experienced software tester I know that generally vendors generally aren’t interested in bug reports unless verified by an established contact.

    Hello,

Recently I have buy an LanDisk like LD1 from A-Link, but it isn’t.

I had some problems with the original firmware that come with it (45-69) and i have change it for 46-70. Some times I have the same problems, it doesn’t have ethernet conectivity. After reset the “factory defaults” works better with USB, but some times lost the ethernet.

Some one can explain, from the version 47b4, what firmwares or in wich order must be send to the LandDisk?

    Thanks.

  31. Hi,

Can you add media server and print server capability to this processor and unit,
if so, how can it be done.

    Tks

  32. Willem says:

    Hi,
I see on the net that there are some having Loader 70.
Here, Loader 69 is the latest. What are the differences
    between them, who knows ?

  33. Hi,
I bought the landisk on ebay, as it was advertised that one can connect two of those landisks to have some kind of RAID, meaning mirroring of the one disk to the other, e.g. via lan. To my mind it should be possible to implement such a functunality within the software. Perhaps using the Landisk Utility where one could tick to landisks to be conntected as RAID.
Are there any plans to implement such a functionality? It would be highly appreciated by lots of customers I think as it would highly improve data safety.
Thanks for your feedback, perhaps via email to c-d-g(at)arcor(dot)de or via update in this discussion.
    Cheers, Chris

    Hi,
The info with my Landisk says it uses Samba, which is open-source, so surely more than the DHCP should be released by RDS?

  35. hibikijoji says:

    Hi,

Thanks so much or this. I found this off google by searching NAS-BASIC. It solved the vista issues that was plaguing me for so long!

  36. Hi there! I’ve just bought a LanDrive called Advance, sould by Pixmania.com, it came with version 41 but I soon found your site and updated to 48, loader 69. I would like to know is besides SMB and FTP is it possible to create some kind of Web Server? Because I would like to give my address (URL or IP) to some friends with some files for them to download but explaning them that it’s FTP and not HTTP is a little bit dificult for them. LOL so, is it possible to do that? Feel free to contact me in my e-mail.

Thank’s a lot, greetings from Portugal!

  37. ICE_BM says:

    Hi,
I have just started playing with a Landisk, mine is branded LASER (laserco.com.au). The unit shipped with NAS-BASIC45a and LOADER69. I’m attaching the unit to a linux server (FC6) via the LAN interface. Firstly I’ve had to overcome the lack of support for smbfs mounting in FC6. Using the command:
    #echo 0 > /proc/fs/cifs/LinuxExtensionsEnabled
prior to mounting makes the cifs mount work, which is great, but now I have another problem…the timestamps of files I copy onto the landisk are set to current time by the Landisk. My desire is to use this mini-beast as a backup location with rsync, but given the timestamp problem this will be less than perfect. Has anyone else encountered this problem, and if so, is there a known fix with newer firmware?

    thanks,
    Brian.

  38. Hallo Dennis,

  40. Robert says:

    Hello
I have posted a question about a problem with accessing files from the command prompt in Win98 and Win2k, but it seems to be gone from this list.
    Here it is again.
I have downloaded and installed the latest stable bios upgrade. The drive is online and works fine in Win98,Win2k,WinXp and Vista but when accessing a shared folder using the DOS prompt (win98) or CMD (win2k) there are significant inconsistencies with the usual functions. In particular:
    1) DIR *.EXE or DIR *.* will not work properly as the return list is not filtered by the extension
    2) When executing a program, if there are more files with executable extensions (like Files.EXE, Files.Com, Files.Bat) the system will not run either (while Dos uses a specific sequence)

One of the main reasons to use this landrive is to share these folder for DOS applications so that they can be accessed by all computers on my lan and one specific older model (win98) runs all the old applications. But with this firmware, most DOS applications run into problems due to the DIR problem.

    Do you have a solution?
    Thanks
    Robert
