LANDISK: NAS-BASIC48

Just got a confirmation from my contacts: RDC has released NAS-BASIC48 to vendor(s) no loader change. The NAS-BASIC48 has been released to fix Microsoft Vista bugs.

indeed in the webinterface there is mention of wget stuff, but there is no function addressed to it yet. Even the release notes of RDC does not mention it

I am waiting for the files now, so that I can release it asap.

I’ve released the NAS-BASIC48.. (not tested yet. Probably later today)

firmware tested, the wget stuff is bogus as the cgi is not included (probably also too big to be included into the memory and maybe this html is also used for the 2891 chipset

New is in the GUI that there is now more info aobut the HDD inserted.

Extra disk info: – FW: wx. “3.AAE” – SN: ex. “5LS3AG02”

Update information for RDC2882 chipset: this chipset will be phased out Q1 2008. Af from today the latest version of the firmware is the latest one(s) available from my website http://www.aroundmyroom.com/landisk

total focus of RDC is now the RDC2891 and from Q2 2008 the RDC2892 chipset

I want to use the NAS as a movie server. I’ve tried it and have streamed 3 quality divx movies at one time. The problem I have with it is there is no way to write protect the drive after putting the movies on it. Wonder if that feature will ever be available in a future release?

I use an MG-35 as the player.

    Hi, I’m wondering …

I have a Prestigo Net Drive 500Gb (PNAS3ND500) which I think is RDC 2882 Chip. I have problem with vista connecting SMB/CIFS over ethernet, I tried registry tweak for LM NTLM session authentication but no differance in operation, I can see folders and that’s about it, cant do anything from vista …

Their site is not good for browsing and they no longer list this model or I cant get to it, anyhow they list the PNAS3GB0750 model which looks exactly the same with the following firmware.

The firmware they have on there site is :-

    Firmware (version 45-69) 24/11/2006 Win98/2K/XP English

I looked with HxD and it mentions RDC 2882 v0.6.9 … I have not tried this because I do not think this version is vista compatible either :/ …

I’m wondering can I update my net drive with firmware or NAS-BASIC48?

I am not sure because I don’t know whats involved how to update everything?

    Thanks

  3. @Rikski
How dare you use my work without asking permission, even worse, you removed the fact that it was my work from the completed artical!

RIKSKI-NAS v1.0? Not likely! what version is it anyway? Looks like ViperNAS v1.3!

If you had read my site you would have realised that I am more than willing to alter it for anybody.

In fact, I am more than willing to add your ideas to my UI, and give you FULL CREDIT for the fact that they are your ideas… I cant see any trace of it being my work in that interface.

Just FYI, I am a UK user, I just dont use the data on the NAS drive. I am happy to change it. As for allowing hidden shares? Great! Throw me the code and I’ll add it… and GIVE YOU CREDIT!

    Get the idea?

    Ben

Get the ORIGINAL ViperNas v1.3 (soon to be 1.4) here: http://projects.viperfang.net/vipernas

  4. Rikski says:

    @Ben,

Ok, Ben – Firstly calm down…. Yes the GUI is basically your code – (I never Denied it – infact I even – quoted a thanks in the ReadMe – which you seem to be ignoring).

So everyone (if you haven’t read it in the ReadMe) please note:- this is Ben’s interface (yet, slightly modified).

I hope that makes you feel slightly better, I am not one for ripping off peoples work (which is why I paid respect in the ReadMe).

Now, Why would I want to share the details on how to do a Hidden share – when you are not prepared to share your work? (- just look at my modified code to yours – help yourself!)

    – Now, on another angle Ben – Did it occur to you that it is quite a compliment to have your work modified (and yet be thanked for it) and included inside the Firmware?

I am sorry that you are offended, Perhaps in future I will not bother to contribute – besides your interface is the best I have seen!

    Regards

    Rikski

  5. Rikski says:

    @Ben,

Already looks like you’ve released V1.4 of ViperNAS.

Now let me guess, did you “Steal” that code from me now? (What’s this eye for an eye?).

Fortunately, I am pleased that you have used it in your Interface – but let me guess – no Credit? – Well fortunately I can handle it.

So, looks like you have lowered yourself down to my level? – eh?

Pitty, You don’t credit people in your work though? – not that it matters.

Apologies to other readers, for this childish tic for tak.

    Now, best regards.

    Rikski

  6. First of all @ Rikski
You are welcome to check the code, you know how, I have use by own code. But I’m not here for this type of eye for an eye thing. The thing that annoyed me was you put your name accross the version (The bit that states what version of vipernas it is / is based off). Thats the easiest way for users to see what features have been updated etc.

Looks like we have offended each other here. Im guessing we have used the same code for the hidden share ( I can only see one way of adding it!)

So hows this, you send me an email, or post here, with your tag (assuming is RikSki) and a website maybe or something where poeple can contact you. I am Happy to pass that credit to you.

    @Everybody
Sorry about this tit for tat behiour that seems to be developing.

I’ve had a report of an error in disk space calculation. I have tweaked the code, but I would like to know if anyone else is having the same issue.

    Anyone can contact me here:

I’m using a NexStarLX enclosure that’s running NAS-BASIC46, LOADER 70,VANTEC,2006-10-9. Will NAS-BASIC48 work for this enclosure and is there anything to be gained by upgrading to it? It’s currently attached to systems running XP Pro SP2 via LAN.

    Thanks…

    Hi Dennis,

I’ve been reading through all comments on your website and have noticed you mentioned there’s a way to get around the 4GB limit on a NAS FAT32 system using a “trick”. Can you please elaborate on this? I’d like to know because I have my NAS mounted to my dreambox (Linux based sattelite receiver) and would like to stream DVD isos to my dreambox. Do I need a specific firmware version to do this?

I’m Dutch as well but since there’s so many international readers here I dediced to post in English.

  10. The trick is to use ‘samba’ share cause than the device will ‘cut’ the file in 2 pieces
and when using samba again the device will ‘merge’ the files again

by FTP it’s not supported. I’ve no idea if it would work on a dreambox

  11. Chris says:

    Translation of mjnavapo’s comment:

    Dennis, I have a HDLAN Connection N & C with 2882 chip.
I had many problems with the original firmware, so I installed a firmware that I found on the Conceptronic FTP: V47 Loader70 and with this firmware the NAS functioned perfectly.
Strangely enough a few days ago Conceptronic removed the firmware from their http://FTP.

Yesterday I installed the new V48 Loader69 and since then the NAS has been acting up badly. I tried installing older versions and other firmware from other manufacturers but the NAS still operates badly.

The problem arises when transfering files from the NAS to the computer (The other way around functions more or less the way it should, although not as good as before). Before the NAS maintained a transfer rate of 3.5 MB/s but since I installed the new firmware the transfer rate jumps up and down: sometimes 1 MB/s, 3 MB/s, sometimes it stops completely, making file transfer very slow. Has anyone else had this problem? Is there a solution to fix it?

    Regards.

“The trick is to use ’samba’ share cause than the device will ‘cut’ the file in 2 pieces and when using samba again the device will ‘merge’ the files again by FTP it’s not supported. I’ve no idea if it would work on a dreambox”

Well, that’s exactly what I’ve done. I’ve done a cifs mount on my dreambox 500+.
So technically it should work? What exactly do you mean by using “samba share”? You mean creating a folder and putting it in the sharing list?

I’ve created a password protected folder using the SMB server option of the NAS (2882 chip, NAS-BASIC39, LOADER 067). Took me a while to figure out what username the NAS would require for a mount to my dreambox. Apparently on my NAS it’s “Gast” (Did hooking up the NAS to a Dutch XP based PC set “Gast” as a standard username in the NAS?!).
I then set up a cifs mount on my dreambox linked to the folder I created in the SMB server option of the NAS. I’m able to read from the drive, play mp3s etc. and am able to record video from the dreambox.

I haven’t tried transfering a file larger than 4GB to the NAS yet because I was afraid it would crash the drive. Are you saying the NAS will automatically split the >4GB file in two when I transfer a file from my PC to the NAS through LAN?

Are there any additional options for the SMB server that I might need in the newer version of the firmware?

How exactly does the NAS get it’s username for a SMB share and is it possible to change this username?

    Thanks in advance,

    Chris

    Dennis I have a HDLAN N & C Connection with 2882 chip.

With the original firmware gave me a lot of problems, but you install a firmware that appeared in the FTP Conceptronic V47 Loader70 with this firmware and I worked perfectly.

Interestingly a few days Conceptronic delete this firmware your FTP.

Yesterday you install the new V48 Loader69 of Conceptronic and since then I have in the HDLAN very bad, I tried to install other firmware other manufacturers or older and continues to operate as evil.

The problem is only when copying files to the computer HDLAN (read files in the HDLAN).

Prior had maintained a rate of about 3.5 MB / s and since installing the new firmware transfer is not stable (1MB, 0 KB, 600KB, 3MB, 0 KB, 2MB, etc.), taking microjoints and transfer becoming very slow.

Do you have evidence of this problem in other units?
Is there any way to solve it?

    Thank you.

PS: I do not know if the translation is entendera well, as I do not speak English and I used the translator of google. I hope it is enough to be understood.

I bought a Venus NAS running NAS-BASIC45, LOADER 67 in Thailand and use it from XP SP2 and Mac (Leopard) through the LAN. Basically it works fine but once in a while (every 2 days or so) it hangs. Not sure whether this is a known issue? I get the impression that the case gets pretty hot. Room temperature is some 35 degrees celsius during the day and around 28 a night and the disk is always on. Not sure whether a firmware upgrade is available and whether it would make any difference?

  15. Chris says:

    @Nick

Your LAN shouldn’t get too hot when you’ve set the “Disk Sleep Timeout”. unless somehow your drive is being read from every 10 minutes or so, all day.

    @Dennis

Any idea about the username thing I asked about in my previous comment(the one before the translation I made of mjnavapo’s comment)

    @mjnavapo

I’ve translated your comment for you. But untill now nobody has encountered the same problem you have with your NAS.

  16. Chris says:

I tried the >4GB file transfer and it failed. Read some of the firmware release notes and figured out I really DID need an upgrade as file spanning is only supported from NAS-BASIC44 and up. I upgraded to the latest (fixed) firmware NAS-BASIC48, LOADER 69 and this works perfectly! Thnx Dennis (and conceptronic) :).

  17. nick says:

I have set the disk sleep timeout to 5 minutes (was 0 before) and removed the case to prevent the printed circuit from getting too hot. I will test for a couple of days to see whether this improves the situation.
Has anyone experienced similar problems (NAS hangs, doesn\’t respond to ping)? I have some 10 users accessing the NAS.

  18. Chris says:

    @nick

Good idea, although I’m a big fan of “airflow” to cool stuff down. I’m thinking of modding the case with a big 12cm Papst fan(rigged with an air-filter). My NAS doesn’t get warm at all but I dislike that little screamer of a fan that’s in there now.

I found out my RDC chip is a 2881 instead of a 2882. Compatibility of the firmware relies on the board the chip is soldered to. In other words: it depends on the other components (IDE controller etc.). My 2881 works perfectly with the new software.

Hi guys, hope you don’t mind if I bring my question back into the light…..

I recently aquired a HD9-SU2LAH (NAS2890-008 LOADER 3.2), can ne1 please tell me if an updated firmware is available for this model. Also I noticed on my network that the nas drive seems to give all read/write abilities, Is there a way I can make all the files read only except when I FTP in with a password?

Also just tried to load the ViperNAS v1.5c into my drive using the maintenance page, and basically it told me to get stuffed lol.

I tried emailing mediasonic on their website a number of times using the contact us at http://www.mediasonicinc.com/store/ but they were as much use as a chocolate teapot with their no response.

ive used MT & another couple of upgrade tools plus tried upgrading the box from within its own maintance section but it always fails.

  24. Chris says:

I almost forgot to report back on my now success story!

Everything is working as it should on my dreambox 500+.
I have mounted the NAS (cifs) and installed both the DreamDVD plugin and the PlayDVD plugin (to select and feed the .ISOs to DreamDVD) and it works like a charm!
By upgrading the firmware of my NAS (to NAS-BASIC48, LOADER 69) it’s now possible to store files larger than 4GB (DVD ISO files) and stream those to the dreambox.
To get the cifs mount working on the dreambox you do have to send the following command through telnet once (or create a script to do this everytime you reboot the dreambox): echo 0 > /proc/fs/cifs/LinuxExtensionsEnabled

Recording and playback on the NAS also works great!

    Chris

@Sean: Your firmware has a completely different name than the firmware for the 2882 (2881) chip on the newer boards. This newer firmware most likely will not work on your device.

    Your firmware:
    NAS2890-008 LOADER 3.2

    My Firmware:
    NAS-BASIC48, LOADER 69

You must have one of the older boards with a 2881 or maybe even a completely different chip.

    @Mark: check this file: http://www.aroundmyroom.com/images/2006/11/landrive.pdf
Read it thoroughly. It tells you how to distinguish the components on the board to see if your NAS is compatible with the newer firmware. My NAS is 100% identical to the one in the pictures in that .pdf file.

  25. nick says:

@chris: Thanks for your advice! My NAS still hangs every two days. Removing the case to allow for better ventilation and setting the sleep time to 5 doesn’t seem to help. Please note that my case has no fan at all. I get the impression that you have a more sophisticated version compared to mine.

I would like to try to upgrade to the latest firmware if possible. Detailled instructions on how to do this are greatly appreciated. I don’t think that I need any special features and also don’t care how the user interface looks like.

Here the facts again about the device to be upgraded:

    Venus NAS-BASIC45, LOADER 67
    Chip: RDC 2882-G
    Board: FT3511-LAN VER:C1

    Thank you so much!

    Hi,
until now the landrive worked fine with several windows and linux clients. I recently bought an HP officejet 9130 with a network card – a so called digital sender, which makes *.pdfs. Scanning into a share on a windows notebook works fine, scanning to my landrive does not work. I allways get a network error. I tried for example:
“\\192.168.1.2\data” as target. “data” is the name of a directory with password on the landrive. As username I used “WORKGROUP\STORAGE-XXXX” as seen on the status page of the landrive. SMB password is “data”. As officejet’s login method I choosed “LM & NTLM” instead of “NTLM” or “NTLMv2”.
A “net use g: \\192.168.1.2\data data” from my windows notebook works fine.
“\\192.168.1.1\data” is a share on a windows notebook. In this case everything works, using the notebooks username and password – the officejet 9130 is logged in.
At a glance: Notebook -> Landrive: ok; Officejet -> Notebook: ok; Officejet -> Landrive: fails. Where is the difference?

    Thanks in advance

Short question – is there a tool available to check upon the chipset without opening the device (so that warranty is not void).

Reason being: I have the NAS-drive documented with manual http://www.lindy.de/lindyshop/manuals/32457.pdf.

However, I cannot tell which chipset it uses. (Would like to load latest firmware as it seems the current one has a bug and is incabable on disabling the built in DHCP-server…)

Any idea, anyone? Every hint appreciated.

    Many thanks in advance !

  36. @Wilfried, the manual is made or based on RDC2881 or RDC2882 ..
but that will not tell anything about your chipset, afaik maybe only by using the tool to see bootloader and inserted firmware you can tell little more ..
