Yuixx – CE 3100 – Streaming HD media Player / IPTV solution

2L International & Metrological announced today in a press release the first ready-to-market streaming HD media Player / IPTV solution based on Intel(r) Media processor CE 3100 (Metrological press release including images can be found here)

Involved in the project I can of course tell and show a little more than what the press release is announcing. In short: The device is focussing on HD content, streaming media and much more! I’m impressed about the quality of the Intel CE 3100 (aka Canmore SoC) which is totally different from all the solutions I have seen before and worked with. Yes it does 1080p at 1920*1080, it has HDMI 1.3a, Composite, Component, Stereo, S/PDIFF optical, USB at the back and USB at the front, SD/MMC cardreader and optional: smartcard reader & all kinds of Digital Tuner cards.

Last year Intel & Yahoo announced the availability of Widgets and they can be embedded as well. What to think about Twitter on your TV or Flickr or many other Widgets?

At birth the guys of Conceptronic gave the

  1. Looks great!!

Does it have the same posibilities as the CFH? (specially playing media from network (SMB)) Then it may be the successor of my CFH…

Any idea on how much it’s going to cost at introduction?

  2. Retailprices are unknown for me right now. I do not have them on hand
depends on what kind of type you get.
and yes it would have similar possibilities like CFH

  3. miha72 says:

You have done it again. This looks like a good product.

    Now to the technical stuff:
Can it do h264? Can it do MKV?

Will Conceptronic make a device with DVBS (2) reciever?

Can we eypect the same type of support as with the CFH?

  4. Michiel says:

Looking good! The interface look like my xbox. Finally a HD player that can beat my xbox? I was testing a HDX for a few weeks ago but the intreface i didn’t like. The screenshots form the yuiixx looks much better.

  5. silvom says:

Looks like my new toy ! I have also some questions
1.Which torrent client is used (if any)
2.Is there a possibility to install HDD in the box ?
    3. Is there any fan installed in the box ?

  6. miha72 says:

    Great 3 Yes-es.

Will there be a Youtube support?
    Is plugin api available?
Is there a community site to aggregate plugins/channels?

How big is the fan? 12″?

  7. I cannot imagine why we would not have youtube support
plugin api could become available that will be decided later
right now there is no community site
cannot give info about fan yet

  8. Remco says:

Does it have smart card support for decrypting the Irdeto2 encryption, like the one used by Ziggo?
    Then is really getting interesting.

  9. Matt says:

    Hi Dennis,

Looks like a great product – do you have any screen shots of the EPG for the twin DVB-T tuners?

    Cheers,

    Matt

  10. Robert says:

Does it play Blu-Ray and HD-DVD rips?
Does it play Blu-Ray advanced audio codes such as TrueHD and DTS-HD?
5.1 or 7.1 analog audio ports?

  11. @remco: if you read the press release you can read that smartcard is optional and depends on the project

    @Robert
Blu-Ray is not first scope. For sure it will not play native bluray due to licenses which are very hard to get
    more info http://www.metrological.com/node/products/

    @Matt
no screenshot of the EPG has been forwarded to me yet. Do you have something special in mind?

  12. Silvom,

it’s not a matter of not be able to do but when we talk with our partners it will be decided if it will be implemented yes/no.
Do you have a preferred client?

  13. Matt says:

    @Dennis
I was just really keen to see what a really sexy next-gen EPG with PVR functionality might look like given the OpenGL ES / OpenVG UI capabilities mentioned in the press release :)

  14. silvom says:

Dennis , any mainstream torrent client already implemented on popular nmts would be very welcome…

  15. Sven says:

    Is the board from GigaByte?

Have it support for AAS & Co Subs with embedded Fonts? (Anime Support)

When can I bye it in Germany?

  16. Harry says:

I doubt it will have a competitive price compared to the PCH, cause de CFULLHDMAi already sells at around the price of the PCH.
    I guess i will cost at least 300 euros…..

  17. @Sven we will focus on the most used fonts like SRT, ASS/SSA etc. but if I can get examples it could be maybe implemented
it’s not on the market yet. Later this year and more info will be revealed on this blog

@harry. You cannot compare it to PCH as this device can do so much more and does not work on the sigma chipset
it depends totally on configuration what the price will be. Expect price ranges starting from 250 euro to 450 euro.

  18. Dennis when it is in the dutch stores?
I want to buy the cFULLHDMAi but i think i can beter wait now for this one.
    Souds great ;)

  19. Sven says:

@Dennis Sorry for my typo. I wanted to type ASS.

I hope for real Killer. :-)

My first Network Media Player was a modded Xbox in 2003, 2008 switching to PS3 + TVersity, 2009 PS3 + PS3 Media Server. So far, a PS3 is best Solution, if you want watch HD Anime with embedded Fonts.

    But 180W PS3 + 150W PC is not cool. I want care free player with 50W + 40W NAS.

By the way. Will it support SMB Shares?

  20. jbr says:

My compliments on this innovation. From the first glimpses it sure looks like a promising all-in-one player. I hope you will manage to keep it as flexible as previous products; with this I mean that it is open to modifications by the end user, such as the possibiliy to install tools like torrent-clients and nzbreaders (SABnzbd+ is preferred of course).

Do you have any idea about the amount of power drawn in idle state? If it is capable to be used for other applications than just playing media (NAS, download client) this might be a very interesting figure.

  21. Mark says:

    Wow, what a great device!

First thing that came to mind: does it support KPN’s IPTV-solution? It used to be called Mine, but now it’s KPN Interactive TV. That would be so cool! Then I can finally ditch my UPC subscription :)

  22. Mark says:

And oh yes, Transmission has to be on it :) Or at least it should be “funpluggable” ;)

Neat feature would be that when you put the device on standby, that it still functions as NAS and download client. I think devices like the HDX-1000 have this ability.

  23. Joris says:

    Hoi Dennis,

  24. porkepik says:

This device looks like a winner =]

One things that i really hope will make it: REAL support for HTML tags (italics and x,y position mostly) in SRT subs. No current device on the market can do it, only PC players.

  25. porkepik says:

    Hi dennis,

I have no idea if there are standards existing in the SRT fansub community…

But it looks like that: http://paste2.org/p/228084
Starting from line 415, you can see what the x,y position indicators are like.

It is especially useful so to not have the subtitle displayed on top of other hardcoded text inside the picture (like many US tv shows where the names of executive producers appear for like 10 minutes ;)

  26. Mark says:

    Dennis,

Any idea if it will support KPN Interactive TV?

  28. Luky27 says:

Will it be compareable to Dune’s BD Prime?

    If it comes with:
    -DVD drive (better BD drive*)
    -Optional DVBS(2) HD-Tuner
-well integrated and simple to use PVR time shift
-have low power consumption in stand-by mode
-good performance from (QNAP) NAS devices

then it will be my next device…

    …with or without BD drive*.

*BD drive – if not, why not… HDI’s CENTER & Prime have it…
so why souldn’t this one not get a Hybrid NMT?
Costs can’t be the reason. We all know that licenses cost…
but look at Dune – it’s not much more expensive than other good players
but comes with a BD drive.

  29. Luky27 says:

    Ahhh, yes:

-it must be as silent as possible! (woman factor;)

    –> Choose standard fan size
–> allow end usert to replace fan with more expensive / super silent fan.
    Thx!

  30. ysco says:

    Hello dennis,

Will this box also have the option off 2 cable tuners ?
Will this box have a true gigabit connection ?
Will it accept my Qnap 109 II over the network ?
How much faster will be the intel chip compared with the sigma chip ?
Par and unrar are very slow on the HDX-1000 and also transfers over the network are very slow so will this be better on your box ?
Like said before by others i think the box must allow custom plugins, like installing nzbget or sabnzbd+ or yamj, things we can do now on the popcorn or hdx-1000.
Don`t know why people still using torrent tho cause newsgroups are much faster.
Now i have the hdx-1000 which is in my opinion a very slow box with lots of faults.
Your box looks very promising and can`t wait to have some more detailed info.

    Greats ysco,

    From holland

  31. ysco:
depending on the project there can be a tuner inside
the box will have a gigabit connection. ‘True ??’ it’s a 800Mhz processor so a full gigabit connection could be a wish but we will check the performance of course
depending what you mean with will it support my QNAp 109ii: YES nas boxes will be supported by UPnP and SMB or even maybe NFS

if you check the specifications of the intel chip compared to sigma you can find that the Intel one is faster.
We will investigate the usability of plugins

  32. ysco says:

Thanks for the fast reply dennis.

I think the usability of plugins will be very important for most users, i think when this is not added the interest for most people will be gone then.
On all nmt or for example my (qnap nas) can handle plugins to make the product more usable and you can ad some cool stuff.
So i hope that this will be implemented in you box to make it a very interesting product.
Will there also be added on the back a esata connection ?
    And a final question,
How will the browser perform in this box, i see that it uses firefox.
Will the browsing be limited on loading the web pages or will it load full pages will all contents, the browsing true the hdx-1000 is not good at all so i hope the browser experience will be better with your box.

    Greats ysco..

    From holland.

  33. Olaf says:

    Hello Dennis,

I’ve seen the CFULLHDMAi working and I like it very much. The support is perfect and it plays virtually anything. I am looking for a mediaplayer/-streamer and I wonder if I should wait for the Yuixx.
If it has every feature the CFULLHDMAi has now (and more), I will almost certainly wait for this new product. I know you’ve answered this question earlier, but I want to be sure. Are there any features you know of that will not be in the Yuixx but are available on the CFULLHDMAi?

    Olaf (Holland)

  34. Graeme says:

    Can it play m2ts files?

And can it display Blu-ray style PGS subtitles embeded in the file?

None of the current NMTs can handle this type of subtitle.

If it can do this AND bitstream TrueHD & DTS-HD through the HDMI 1.3 output I’m sold!

  35. Daffyduck says:

What Graeme said is what I want and a few other guys that are in the market for mediaplayers.

  36. Jasper says:

Gaat Digitenne van KPN (DVB-T met smartcard) ook werken?

En kun je een idee geven wanneer de speler beschikbaar komt. Betreft het hier 1 maand of nog 3 of rond de kerstdagen?

  37. kacho says:

    Hi Dennis,

It really seems to be a nice device.
I’d like to ask when the release date is expected.
And also is it possible to output full HD signal via the HDMI and in the same time to connect a SD TV via S-video or composite. I don’t know if it’s possible at all but I’m sure there are people like me that need this option and will use it.
Will the device have multichannel (like 5.1) analog output together with the digital one.
    Thanks

  38. hcour says:

Will it read/write NTFS formatted hard drives, or does it use EXT3 like most media players currently on the market? Thanks.
